Most people have heard of Pilates. In comparison, Barre is still relatively new and unknown. It may have roots in classical ballet but it is not a dance class and definitely not only for dancers!
Barre is paced a little faster than what you might be used to in your YPP Pilates classes and set to a beat. However, it is still a low impact (no jumping etc) form of exercise that, like Pilates, focuses hugely on technique. I rarely stop talking and giving corrections throughout the class!
We incorporate high repetition exercises and utilise props, such as soft balls, small weights and resistance bands to challenge the body. Throughout the class we will work through each main muscle group; beginning with arms, going on to thighs, seat (glutes and hamstrings), and finishing with the abs, each followed by a stretch. The aim is to fatigue each of these muscle groups so you leave having worked the whole body… and maybe feel a little wobbly walking down the stairs!
Yes, Barre is going to challenge you but it’s done at your own pace. You’re encouraged to “reset” at any point in an exercise and by that, I basically mean have a little rest! This is so you are always performing exercises with great technique! If you feel your technique slipping as you get tired (and you will be!) it’s much better to pause for a moment and join back in when you feel you can. To begin with you might feel like you’re doing this all the time but after a while it will become less and less as you become stronger and stronger.
Looking forward to meeting you at the Barre. Beginners are always welcome!

p.s. Don’t feel like you’re ready to try Barre? Remember we also have Barre Fusion on the timetable. This class introduces a few Barre exercises and the structure of a Barre class alongside more familiar Pilates exercises. No Barre is necessary, so this one is available online too!
