Pilates for body & mind

If you have been to one of my classes you may have noticed that I like to begin each class with a centring exercise. This often comes in the form of taking the body off balance to start with, then slowly returning the body so we can aim to be evenly balanced and grounded. For me, it’s a great way to get into the “Pilates zone” and prepare the body and mind for the exercises that follow. A great quote from Joseph Pilates comes to mind here; “Pilates is complete coordination of mind, body and spirit” and I couldn’t agree more!

Pilates not only it helps to strengthen the muscles and improve balance, it sharpens our mental faculties, which in turn improves our performance both at work and at home. How often do you find that after a class you can think more clearly, and are more able to problem solve in your work or personal life?!

Practicing Pilates regularly teaches the brain to learn a new skill, always keeping the mind engaged. Consequently, improving memory and brain training have a positive impact on your mental health. On a more personal note, re-igniting my love of Pilates after struggling with my own post-natal mental health helped me tune in with my mindfulness. It really has helped me find my positive happy place. I’ll leave you with another famous quote by the man himself: “The mind when housed within a healthful body, possesses a glorious sense of power” Joseph Pilates.
